How can you effectively prepare for child custody discussions?

If you and your spouse have decided to pursue a divorce in the state of Louisiana, you have a series of important decisions to make in the near future. Some of the choices you will need to make may involve things regarding finances, property distribution and the custody of your children. Discussions where child custody agreements are formed will undoubtedly be some of the most important to you. Effectively preparing for a successful discussion that leads to an arrangement that benefits both parties, is doable with the application of a few basic practices.

According to the Huffington Post, child custody mediation is necessary when you and your spouse are unable to reach an agreement regarding the living arrangements of your children. If there are irreconcilable differences regarding the care, location and needs of your children, court appointed mediation may be recommended to help you and your spouse allot responsibilities and make decisions. As you prepare for mediation, here are some of the things you can do:

  • Reach out to your spouse: It may not be a bad idea to try and talk with your spouse one final time. See if there are any points that both of you can agree on to help shorten the time and lessen the stress of mediation.
  • Be clear about your expectations: Know exactly what outcome you are hoping for as you go into mediation. Be cordial in your approach, but do not be afraid to define your expectations.
  • Work with a counselor: Consider meeting with a professional counselor to help you prepare mentally for the process of mediation. Ask for advice regarding how to present yourself, how to maintain neutrality and how to stay focused even during difficult discussions.
